What is Nija?

Nija is a free, open-source clipboard manager by Appfide. It keeps your clipboard history and syncs it across macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS through a database you provide — Supabase, PocketBase, CouchDB, Firestore or MongoDB — with optional end-to-end encryption. There is no Appfide server and no account, and nothing is collected.

Overview

निज (nija) is Sanskrit for "one's own", and that is the whole idea: your clipboard, on your database, under your keys. Every other clipboard sync app puts a company's server between you and your own text. Nija has no server to breach — the app talks directly to a database you already control.

Point it at a Supabase project, a PocketBase binary on a home server, a CouchDB or Cloudant instance, Firebase Firestore or MongoDB, and every device you pair reads and writes the same history. The app checks the database for you and can set up the tables, collections and indexes it needs. With end-to-end encryption on — the default for a new group — the database only ever holds ciphertext it cannot read.

On the desktop Nija runs in the tray with a global hotkey and starts at login. On Android and iOS it captures when the app is open, because both systems block background clipboard access. You can also use it with no database at all, as a plain local clipboard manager.

Nija is open source under the MIT License, built with Flutter, and developed in the open on GitHub with secret scanning, SHA-pinned Actions and reproducible release builds with checksums. Installers for every platform are on GitHub Releases; a signed build for Mac, iPhone and iPad is on its way to the App Store.

Features

  • Bring your own database

Sync through Supabase, PocketBase, CouchDB / Cloudant (realtime), Firestore or MongoDB (polling). The app checks the database and offers to set up what is missing.

  • End-to-end encryption

Optional Argon2id-derived AES-256-GCM, on by default for a new group, so the database only ever stores ciphertext.

  • Device management

Pair devices with a PIN-protected QR code; set send-only or receive-only roles, temporary access, pause, block or remove a device, or send a clip to one device.

  • Desktop-native

Tray icon, global hotkey (⌘⇧V / Ctrl+Shift+V), start at login, keyboard navigation and the newest clips one click away in the tray menu.

  • Privacy filters

Honours password-manager "do not record" hints, can skip anything that looks like a key or token, and capture can be paused from the tray.

  • Open source, MIT licensed

Every line is on GitHub. Release builds come only from tagged commits through GitHub Actions, with SHA256 checksums and an SBOM.

What people use Nija for

  • Copy on the laptop and paste on the phone without a third-party cloud
  • Keep a searchable clipboard history on Windows, macOS or Linux
  • Share snippets between a work PC and a personal Mac through your own database
  • Run clipboard sync entirely on a home server with PocketBase or CouchDB
  • Give a device temporary or send-only access, then remove it and its clips

Who it’s for

Developers, privacy-minded users and teams who want clipboard sync across every platform without handing their clipboard to someone else's server.

Nija FAQ

Is Nija free?

+

Yes. Nija is free and open source under the MIT License, and installers for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS are on GitHub Releases. A paid, Apple-signed build for Mac, iPhone and iPad with automatic updates is coming to the App Store to fund development; it syncs with the GitHub builds.

Does Appfide see my clipboard?

+

No. There is no Nija server and no Nija account. The app talks directly to the database you connect, with the credentials you enter, and nothing is collected or tracked. With end-to-end encryption on, even your database only stores ciphertext.

Which databases does Nija support?

+

Supabase, PocketBase and CouchDB / IBM Cloudant with realtime sync, and Firebase Firestore and MongoDB with polling. Each has a setup guide in the repository, and the app can set up the tables and indexes it needs.

Does Nija capture in the background on phones?

+

On macOS, Windows and Linux capture is automatic in the background. Android 10+ and iOS block background clipboard access, so on phones Nija captures when the app is open or when you tap Capture.

Can I use Nija without a database?

+

Yes. Local-only mode works as a plain clipboard manager on one device, with no database and no network connections.

How do I report a security issue?

+

Privately, through GitHub Security Advisories on the Nija repository — please do not open a public issue. Reports are acknowledged within 72 hours.
